The Mothers’ Union is an international Christian membership charity that aims to demonstrate the Christian faith in action through the transformation of communities worldwide.
It has been promoting and supporting stable family life since 1876. We have over four million members in 84 countries worldwide and aim to support family life in communities both locally and globally.
In the Diocese of Ely we actively seek to do this regionally and locally. Caring for families for us involves:
- Supporting parents
- Providing holidays for stressed families
- Supporting the Chaplaincy at Littlehey Prison
- Collecting for Cambridge Women’s Aid, Mid-Cambridgeshire Refuge, and Fenland Refuge
- Providing Parent and Child marquees at county/local shows
- Knitting and sewing projects for hospitals, care homes, baby banks, Women’s Refuges, the homeless, and overseas via Christian Hope International
- Family Worker Project, Wisbech
- Supporting parents of sick children at the Rosie Hospital, Cambridge.
By speaking out against social injustice and campaigning for the recognition of the value of stable family life, Mothers' Union aims to work towards its vision of a world where God's love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships.
A significant part of our work locally is campaigning on social justice issues relevant to families wherever they are. In the Diocese of Ely, our members actively support national campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence.
Prayer and fellowship are integral to the way Mothers' Union lives out its calling and vision. Members pray regularly for the health and wellbeing of families worldwide.
Wave of Prayer
Through our Wave of Prayer we support Mothers’ Union members serving their communities across the world. Every day at midday a “wave of prayer” goes around the world, following an annual pattern, which means that every MU region is prayed for at least once during the year.
Mothers' Union (MU) staff at Mary Sumner House and other MU Members in the UK, Ireland and Worldwide, say Midday Prayers LIVE every day, which can be followed on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MothersUnion/) or watched afterwards on the MU YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/MothersUnion/videos).
The Mothers' Union (MU) Diocese of Ely Annual “Wave of Prayer” from 10-12 December, remembers MU Members in our five special link dioceses:
- Lusaka in Zambia
- Shyogwe in Rwanda
- Sokoto AND Ikka in Nigeria
- Karimnagar in India.
We have special relationships with Kigali Diocese (Rwanda) and Vellore Diocese (India) which are two of our Diocese of Ely partnership links.
