Sports Ministry at Barnwell

The Revd Danny Driver and the team at Christ the Redeemer in Barnwell, Cambridge, are doing some great work in Sports Ministry.

Innovation Funding

In 2021, Christ the Redeemer church was awarded Innovation Funding from the Archbishop’s Council.

This Fund aims to support creative approaches to challenges facing the Church of England. The hope is that Innovation Funding for projects will encourage and nurture further innovation that advances mission and supports the Vision and Strategy of the Church of England as new ideas are tested. Christ the Redeemer church

Christ the Redeemer church is in Barnwell, on the outskirts of Cambridge. When Danny became the parish vicar at the Church, he and the team spent time finding out about the community and the needs of the people there, in which one in five people in the parish are aged between five and 18 years old.

Identifying sport as a means to engage more fully with young people in the community, the funding received by the team has allowed them to recruit a full-time youth and children’s worker and two trainee sport and faith ministers, as well as paying for lots of sports equipment to help bolster the sports ministry element.

The team aims to provide space for people to explore who Jesus is in the context of playing lots of different sports. They do this by offering high-quality sports coaching for people of all abilities that is both fun and energising.

They have a particular focus on young people, with a committed to making a positive impact in Barnwell for the future leaders in the local community.

With physical wellbeing and exercise being such an important way to help us keep healthy, the team offers lots of ways for the local community to join in by playing sport, exercising and looking after our bodies.
