Below lists where in the Diocese of Ely our new Deacons will serve, as well as including a little more about each person. Deacons will be ordained by the Bishop of Ely at Ely Cathedral on Sunday 3 July at 10.30am

Elizabeth Jane BAKER

To serve in the Benefice of St Martin, Cambridge. Training Incumbent: The Revd Johannes Roth

My childhood was spent in a Christian home, where my parents taught me and nurtured my growing faith. As a teenager I decided to trust Jesus, and all I had learned became more real to me. I studied at Sheffield University, where I met my future husband. Later I trained to be a teacher in Cambridge, then taught Religious Education.  In 1977 we went to Indonesia where we worked as missionaries for nearly 25 years. Our three children were born there. In 2001 we returned to Cambridge and lived here until 2008 when we moved to Perth, Australia, where my husband lectured, and I did church work. We returned to Cambridge in 2014. Since then, I spent two years on the staff of All Nations Christian College, then trained as an LLM with ERMC. I was accepted for ordination and have done a further year’s training.

Jeanine BOSSY

To serve in the Benefice of Cherry Hinton. Training Incumbent: The Revd Dr Karin Voth Harman

For the last 20 years, Jeanine has followed her passion for challenging inequality and ending the prevalence of poverty and injustice. She has thrived in a career in advocacy in various settings, including the NHS and the national and international charitable sector. Jeanine’s journey to ordained ministry began when living amongst a community of women and orphans in Kenya who inspired her on how to live a life of faith. Having felt a call to explore pioneer ministry from a place of contemplation, Jeanine became the first designated pioneer to train at Westcott House. She has enjoyed nurturing a small contemplative community whilst as a Lay Pioneer. She is excited about all God is calling her to participate in as she continues the adventure in the Parish of St Andrew’s Cherry Hinton as curate.

Edward (Ed) David GREEN

To serve in the Benefice of St Benedict, Cambridge. Training Incumbent: The Revd Canon Anna Matthews

Ed grew up on the south coast, studied Music at Royal Holloway College, London, and moved to Cambridge in 2010 to train as a teacher at Homerton College. Following this, he worked primarily with children who have social, emotional and mental health needs in various schools in the east of England. During his time as a teacher he studied Jewish-Christian relations at the Woolf Institute, before training full-time for ordained ministry at Westcott House. When he is not at work or study he is often found performing or directing a Gilbert and Sullivan opera, and it was through this that he first met his wife, Katie. He also enjoys composing music, playing tiddlywinks, and learning languages.

Lucinda Catherine HOWARD

To serve in the Benefice of Stapleford. Training Incumbent: The Revd Dr Simon Taylor

Lucinda grew up in Northamptonshire and is the eldest of five daughters. After a stint in advertising in Glasgow, she moved to Cambridge to study primary teaching at Homerton College.  She met and married Gavin in 2003 and they have two children, Samuel (16) and Hope (14).  They currently live in central Cambridge with two lively dogs and they love growing community there. Lucinda started her discernment journey a few years after leaving teaching and studied for two years at Ridley Hall. She will be serving as curate in the village of Stapleford, just south of Cambridge. In her spare time she enjoys family walks, sea swimming and fitness sessions (as long as they are followed by coffee with friends).

Bethan RODDEN

To serve in the Benefices of Grantchester and St Mark, Cambridge. Training Incumbent: The Revd Rachel Rosborough

Bethan will be moving to Newnham, Cambridge in June to be Assistant Curate in the parishes of Newnham and Grantchester. She has spent the last three years training at Ripon College Cuddesdon, near Oxford where she has completed a BA and PG Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission. Before training she lived for three years in Cottenham, where she worked as a parish assistant in Fulbourn and the Wilbrahams and was an active Scout Leader. Bethan is married to James, and both enjoy playing boardgames, cooking, baking and travelling. She has particular interests in using the outdoors, hands-on activities, creativity and storytelling in worship and learning. Other areas of interest include Fresh Expressions and Pioneer Church, reconciliation, ecumenism and disability theology.

Margaret (Maggie) Anne TATE-DRUIFF

To serve in the Benefice of The Ramseys and Upwood. Training Incumbent: The Revd Iain Osborne

I grew up in south-west London and in Hereford, attending church but without God meaning much to me personally. Things changed when I started going to a local church youth group in Hereford, where I was able to ask all my questions about God, Jesus, the Bible and the Christian faith. By the time I left school, I was wanting to invest in a life of faith in God, believing and trusting in Jesus. I moved to Cambridge to study Music at university with all the keenness of someone new to faith, growing in love, knowledge and experience of Christ, his church and the world. I first felt called to ordained ministry during this time, though I didn’t recognise and articulate this to anyone until a few years later. Now, that calling has been further discerned, examined and affirmed, through five years of youth ministry in Cambridge and three years of ordination training at Trinity College Bristol, where I developed particular interests in disability theology and creation care. I am excited to be returning to Ely Diocese to begin as a deacon and curate in the Ramseys and Upwood.

Nell Grace WHISCOMBE

To serve in the Benefice of St John the Evangelist, Cambridge. Training Incumbent: The Revd James Shakespeare

Nell has lived in Cambridge for fifteen years, and studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic for her first degree. Having spent a decade working in academic and educational publishing, including for Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment, Nell began training for ordination after the birth of her son in 2018. She has experience as a school governor and as a Brownie leader, as well as a Level 2 qualification in counselling skills, and has just completed the Cambridge MPhil in patristics. Nell is married to Alexander and they have a son, Austin. Some of her particular interests include student ministry/chaplaincy, eco church, and working with young people and parents.
