A wonderful Thanksgiving Evensong for The Venerable Hugh McCurdy's Ministry

Many friends, family and colleagues gathered at Ely Cathedral to give thanks during a special Thanksgiving Evensong to The Venerable Hugh McCurdy.

The Venerable Hugh McCurdy, Archdeacon Emeritus, stepped down as Archdeacon of Huntingdon and Wisbech on the 18 April 2022 after 17 years in the role. On Sunday 8th May a special Thanksgiving Evensong was held to give thanks for Hugh’s Ministry.

All were welcomed to attend the Thanksgiving Evensong at Ely Cathedral to give thanks for Hugh’s Service, which was followed by a reception and presentation to Hugh in the Lady Chapel.

The Right Reverend Stephen Conway, Bishop of Ely, said on the announcement of Hugh’s departure as Archdeacon: "Hugh is an accomplished and dedicated servant of the gospel as archdeacon. I value our professional relationship and our personal friendship. I know that in this way I am in a large company. It is because of this that I am delighted that as one blessed time of ministry for Hugh comes to an end, more blessing is on the way as he moves to a new half time role among us for at least two years, keeping us to the implementation of our Diocesan strategy. I invite your prayers both for Hugh and Ruth".

The Rt Revd Dr Dagmar Winter, Bishop of Huntingdon said of the Thanksgiving Evensong: “It was a lovely occasion and such a tribute to Hugh’s long and faithful ministry in the Diocese that a large congregation gathered for the farewell service. His sermon summed up the essence of his ministry, being both pastoral and missional. We thank God for Hugh.”

Hugh will continue to support the Diocese and the Bishops in leading the implementation of Living Ely 2025 and assisting the Market Towns Project (part of the CoE Strategic Development Funding) to flourish.
