We were sorry to hear of the death on 18th May 2025 at the age 80, of The Rev’d Canon Richard Ames-Lewis and remember his wife Katherine and the family in our prayers.
From the Crockford’s entry for Richard:
Born in 1945 he gained a BA from Emmanuel College Cambridge in 1966, followed by MA in 1970. He trained for ordination at Westcott House and was ordained in Rochester Cathedral. Deaconed 1978 Priested 1979
He served as a curate at Bromley St Marks in the Rochester Diocese from 1978-81 and then in Edenbridge 1981-84 and served as vicar from 1984-91, and Priest –in- charge of Crockham Hill Holy Trinity 1984-91.
He became Priest-in-charge of Barnes St Mary in Southwark Diocese 1991-97 and Team Rector 1997-00, also Rural Dean Richmond and Barnes 1994-2000.
He moved to Norwich Diocese to become Team Rector of E. Dereham and Scarning 2000-2006 and Priest-in-charge Swanton Morley w Beetley, E. Bilney and Hoe 02-06 followed by Team Rector Dereham and District 06-09 and Rural Dean Dereham and Mitford 03-06. He was made an Honorary Canon of Norwich Cathedral in 2006. He retired in 2009 and moved back to Cambridge where he held PTO in Ely Diocese.
Richard’s sudden death came as a great shock and he will be greatly missed in the Cambridge Retired Clergy Group, by friends and colleagues in Cambridge and beyond who very much appreciated his quiet wisdom and deep faith, and not least his wife Katherine and family. His funeral service will be held at St Bene’t’s, Cambridge on Wednesday 25th June at 12 noon.
