The whole of the Diocesan community has been saddened to hear of the unexpected death of Canon Jim Garrard on Monday 8 December. Since 2008, he served faithfully as Canon Precentor at Ely Cathedral, guiding its music and liturgy with great skill and devotion. Jim was a deeply gifted priest whose thoughtful, gentle ministry touched the lives of many and we give thanks to God for his life and ministry.
Bishop Dagmar, Acting Bishop of Ely, has sent condolences on behalf of the Diocese and has asked all to keep Jim’s wife, family and friends and the whole Cathedral community in your prayers at this time.

A Requiem Eucharist will be held in the Cathedral on Friday 9 January 2026, at 11.30am
