Admission of children to Holy Communion before Confirmation
Information for Parishes
In the Diocese of Ely, the Bishop has agreed that permission may be sought from them for the admission of children to Holy Communion before Confirmation, in accordance with the 2006 House of Bishop Regulations. In each case, each parish must seek the permission of the Bishop before admitting children to Holy Communion. Children to be admitted will normally be those who are not yet ready for Confirmation but are ready to receive the sacramental signs of God’s love given in Holy Communion. It is important that there is an ongoing investment in the nurture of both the child, and those having parental responsibility and that following admission, both should be encouraged to see Confirmation as the next step in the Christian journey.
The following Policy Guide and Framework provides a framework for incumbents, parishes and their PCCs who are exploring the admission of children to Holy Communion before Confirmation in the Diocese of Ely. It sets out the procedure for making an application for permission to the Bishop and the expectations and responsibilities of a parish that has received such permission. These include ensuring that there is a clear framework and plan for the continued nurturing of the children admitted to Holy Communion, their continued journey towards confirmation, as well as giving consideration to any implications for patterns of worship to ensure children are full participants in the Eucharist.
To assist parishes, the application form, suggested parental permission form and template certificate are provided here:
The Policy Guide and Framework for Parishes in the Diocese of Ely offered below are a pastoral interpretation of the regulations to aid parishes in considering admitting children to communion before confirmation, and the associated forms. There is also a copy of the General Synod Regulations 2006.
