Announcements: RIP The Rt Rev Timothy Dudley-Smith

 

From the Crockford’s entry for Timothy:

Born in 1926 he gained a BA from Pembroke College Cambridge in 1947 He trained for ordination at Ridley Hall and was ordained in Rochester Cathedral.

Deaconed 1950

Priested 1951

Consecrated 1989

He served as a curate at Northumberland Heath in Kent and then went on to be head of the Cambridge University Mission to Bermondsey in London’s docklands. After 2 years he joined the staff of the Evangelical Alliance as education secretary and editor of it’s magazine, “Crusade”.

Later he moved to the Church Pastoral Aid Society, moving up to be secretary in 1965.

In 1973 he became Archdeacon of Norwich and served as Suffragan Bishop of Thetford from 1981-91 and retired in 1992.

He was awarded an OBE in 2003 and was given an Hon DD from Durham in 2009.

Many will remember him for his still popular hymns “Tell out my soul” and “Lord for the years” among others.

Timothy’s funeral is to be a private family service and there will be a memorial service at St Andrew the Great in Cambridge at 2pm on 27th September. There will be further information on their website.
