Consultation with Historic England when making changes to listed churches.
Title:
Consultation with Historic England when making changes to listed churches.
Summary:
Advice on consulting Historic England when making alterations to your church.
Detail:
Faculty applications - advice from Historic England
Parishes wishing to make alterations or install new facilities in churches will often be required to consult Historic England as part of the consent process. This will apply to the majority of churches in our Diocese, because so many are listed Grade I or II*.
Historic England aims to provide its advice at two key points in the process: pre-application advice when proposals are at an early stage, and later when detailed proposals have been drawn up. Their guidance on accessing this advice has been revised slightly and is available below.
Pre-application advice by Historic England to places of worship
However, when planning any works to a church, parishes should continue to contact the Church Buildings Department in the first instance and we will be able to advise on when best to involve Historic England in the process as your project develops.
