The Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the key lay leader within the Diocese of Ely, accountable for the governance, finance, and strategic operations of the Ely Diocesan Board of Finance. The role also orchestrates the smooth co-operation of the many independent legal entities that make up Ely Diocese and promotes effective governance.
George Woods joined the Diocese of Ely as Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the EDBF on the 1st November 2025. George has joined the Diocese at a pivotal moment as the Diocese responds to both the opportunities and challenges presented by a changing national Church and a growing Diocesan population.
As the chief executive of the Ely Diocesan Board of Finance (EDBF), George will lead the organisation’s strategic and operational work, ensuring that central services effectively support the ministry and mission of parishes, schools, and wider Diocesan activities. The role encompasses responsibility for developing and empowering the Diocesan staff team to deliver collaborative, efficient operations aligned with best practice.
As the senior lay leader within the Diocese, the Diocesan Secretary is accountable for governance, finance, and strategic operations, ensuring the EDBF remains sustainable and responsive to future needs. Key responsibilities include overseeing budgeting, ministry share, income generation, and long-term financial planning, while fostering effective cooperation among the various independent legal entities that constitute the Diocese of Ely.
