Saturday 3rd July 2021 Petertide ordinations of Priests and Deacons

The Petertide ordinations for the Diocese of Ely are planned to take place at Ely Cathedral: for Priests on Saturday 3rd July at 2pm and at 5pm, and for Deacons on Sunday 4th July at 10.30am.

Hearing what people from minority ethnic backgrounds want to say to our churches.

About this event

The Church of England is for all people, in all places, from all backgrounds. At the same time, the recent Panorama programme showed that people experience exclusion in our churches. At this event, we hear from people from minority ethnic backgrounds what they want to say to our churches.

  • Staffan Dawkins, now at St Paul the Apostle, Tottenham, a majority-black church, formerly a Curate in Ely Diocese

  • Sue Butler, Pioneer Minister in Landbeach and a member of the GRT (Gypsy Roma Traveller) community
  • Caroline Buckley, a member of the GRT community

Wednesday 14th July 202119:00 - 21:00Bishops Council

Members of the Bishops' Council act as the Company Directors and Charity Trustees of Ely Diocesan Board of Finance.

Its members have legal duties to comply with company and charity law in terms of the running of the Diocese of Ely as a charitable business. 

The functions of the Bishops' Council are set out in Standing Order 47 of the Diocesan Synod Standing Orders as follows:

  • to advise the President (the Bishop) on any matters which he may refer to it;
  • to plan the business of the Synod, prepare the agenda for its sessions, and to circulate to members information about matters for discussion;
  • to initiate proposals for action by the Synod and to advise it on matters of policy which are placed before it;
  • subject to the directions of the Synod, to transact the business of the Synod between sessions;
  • to appoint members of committees or nominate members for election to committees subject to the directions of the Synod;
  • to carry out such other functions as the Synod may delegate to it;
  • to act as the Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee;
  • to act as directors of Ely Diocesan Board of Finance. 

Membership of Bishops' Council is set out in Standing Order 44 of the Diocesan Synod Standing Orders, and comprises ex officio members, lay and clergy members elected from each archdeaconry, Bishop's appointees and co-opted members.

The term of office three years, starting on 1 January following the reconstitution of Diocesan Synod. 

The Bishops' Council meets up to six times each year, usually on a Thursday evening from 7pm - 9pm. A residential meeting also takes place once a year.

Monday 19th July 2021 Keep your Safeguarding training up-to-date

The Church of England has introduced a new modular safeguarding training and development programme for use by Dioceses, Cathedrals and Theological Education Institutions.

The programme builds core, generic safeguarding training according to role and through a person's ministry path.

The Church of England Safeguarding Training modules consist of Core Modules; Basic Awareness (C0), Foundation (C1) and Leandership (C2) and Specialist Modules; Safer Recruitment (S1) and Responding to Domestic Violence (S3). (some other modules may also apply on occasion)

The level of the Core Module to which you are expected to undertake will determine which other modules you will need to have previously undertaken. i.e.

  • C0 - if you are only required to undertake a C0 module, you will only need to repeat that training once every three years.
  • C1 - if you are required to undertake a C1 module, you must also have completed a C0 module at least once. You then need to repeat the C1 training every three years.
  • C2 - anyone required to undertake this module must ensure they have also completed a Basic Awareness (C0) and Foundation (C1) module at least once. The C2 module must then be repeated every three years.

Funding Regular Maintenance, Urgent Repairs, Project Development and Facilities Installation

 

Sometimes we take our Places of Worship for granted, that they will always be there, that they will just take care of themselves. Maintenance plans and procedures can seem like a daunting prospect and are easily put off as we get on with the more important day-to-day stuff... Until, that is, the roof starts leaking or bits of masonry start falling off!

This ONLINE workshop is an introduction to the Grant Programmes at the National Churches Trust. From repairing a roof to helping to install an accessible toilet - and many other projects - our grants help keep churches open for worship and community activities and allow them to continue to serve people and communities in all sorts of ways. We provide grants for projects costing anywhere between £500 and over £100,000 for Places of Worship in the UK to carry out maintenance and urgent repairs.

The session will cover:

  • What the Grants Programmes fund;
  • Which is the right Grant Programme for your project;
  • What you will need to have in place to be able to apply;
  • How to apply;
  • Timescales and deadlines;
  • What makes a good application;
  • What happens after you submit an application.

The presentation will last about 45 minutes with 15 minutes for questions and discussion afterwards.

Anybody involved in looking after historic places of worship is able to attend. The event is free of charge and the presentation (in pdf form) will be emailed to all attendees afterwards.

A National Churches Trust webinar - Making publicity work for you : a church tourism workshop

Our regular tourism training is for everyone involved with churches and chapels.

An informative one hour training session brought to you by The National Churches Trust's tourism team. Discover the many ways in which your place of worship can benefit from tourism from increasing visitors and raising funds to recruiting volunteers and staging events.

This session will look at:

  • why promote your church or chapel to visitors?
  • tourism is mission: how publicity can benefit your place of worship
  • planning PR for events, campaigns and activities
  • how to engage people to support what you do
  • catching peoples attention, reaching new people
  • attracting donations and breaking down barriers
  • traditional and modern digital - tools and approaches
  • an intro to social media
  • beware the pitfalls

All involved in historic places of worship are invited to attend.

We will present a 45 minute talk, with lots of useful ideas and content and links to follow up later. We'll then have at least 30 minutes for questions and comments. We'll also encourage you to share ideas and questions with volunteers from the other churches taking part in the chat.

The presentation (in pdf form) will be available to all attendees afterwards.
