Cambridgeshire Churchyard Conservation Award Scheme

Applications close at the end of February (2020) so get your one in soon!

The Wildlife Trust runs the Conservation Churchyard Award Scheme which aims to help villages increase the wildlife of their churchyards.

The Diocese of Ely is encouraging all parishes and their PCCs to sign up for a new programme being run by the Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust, showcasing churchyards as havens for wildlife, and giving churches the chance to show-off their stewardship of this increasingly precious resource.

Did you know that since 1945 97% of historic "unimproved" grassland has been lost to herbicide and fertilizer? All churchyards, however they are currently managed, are a precious haven for flora and fauna, and this award scheme will help guide you to the simplest ways of improving your churchyard management.

Of course, churchyard biodiversity is only one of several ways in which churches can engage positively with environmental issues.  This diocese this year having hosted the hottest day ever on record in the UK, we are also looking for expert volunteers from among our congregations who might be able to offer advice on greening buildings as well as our church members.  We are currently advertising for volunteer posts [link] - do pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested.

A message from Bishop Stephen: “At a time when so much of the natural world is under threat, the Award helps churches to develop their churchyards as sanctuaries for insects, birds and small mammals, alongside their historic monuments and memorials. Churchyards do not need to be clipped in order to be respectful and beautiful signs of the new Creation in Christ.”

More information on the scheme is linked here, along with the criteria and entry form.
